William Penn gives Norse Football scare
William Penn gives Norse Football scare
Date 10/15/1998 12:00 AM | Topic: SportsRiding their victory over Upper Iowa the Norse traveled to Oskaloosa Saturday to take on the Statesmen of William Penn. William Penn lost their last fifteen consecutive games and were hungry for a win. The stage was set for one of Luther's most exciting games of the past two years as the Norse scored fourteen points in the fourth quarter to beat the Statesmen 31-24.
The game began with Luther showing signs of dominance. The defense stopped William Penn on their first drive. The offense drove into scoring position when the William Penn defense stiffened, and the first scoring opportunity was thwarted. William Penn took advantage driving the length of the field for the game's first score.
The Statesmen added a field goal before Luther could score for the first time on a screen pass from Jake Nimrod ('01) to Thane Holland ('01). With the scoreboard reading 10-7 Luther used their momentum to add another ten points before the half and took a 17-10 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter both teams sputtered on offense. William Penn added a touchdown late in the third quarter, but Luther blocked the extra point and the score was 17-16 going into the final quarter of play.
Riding their momentum, William Penn struck quickly in the fourth quarter stealing the lead back from the Norse 24-17.
Nimrod hit Holland for a big gain down the sidelines on the next possession and Nick Kuehl ('02) punched in the tying score with time left in the ballgame. William Penn threatened to score again when Steve Hudak ('00) intercepted a Statesman pass deep in Luther territory. From there Geoff Smith ('01), replacing back up running back Jason Dougherty ('01), punished Statesmen defenders driving his team inside the William Penn 10 yard line. Nimrod punched in the winning score on a one-yard run, and David Muth ('00) gave Caba his fourth interception on the day to seal the win.
Next week is Homecoming at Luther and Wartburg is coming to town. Wartburg is undefeated, ranked nationally, and coming off a big win against Simpson. Kickoff is 1:30 Saturday.
