Luther soccer rises victorious
Date 9/21/2000 12:00 AM | Topic: SportsAfter suffering losses to nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus during last week's competition, the Luther men's and women's soccer teams regained their composure this week with staggering victories against William Penn.
The women's team faced William Penn at home on Saturday, September 16 and pulled off a close win 2-1. Jen Shinbori ('02) scored both of Luther's goals, and Sarah Braun ('04) and Erin Riedesel ('03) each earned an assist to put the Norse ahead in the end. Goalkeeper Michelle Edelmann ('01) had six crucial saves that dampened William Penn's hopes of a shoot-out.
On Sunday, Sept. 17, the women traveled to Dubuque to challenge Clarke and overwhelmed them with a score of 7-1. Six Norse scored to contribute to the team effort, with Dawn Borcherding ('02) adding two to her record. In addition, Braun, Shinbori, Stephanie Finzen ('02), Bess Sorensen ('01), and Anne Peterson ('04) all scored a goal to out-score their opponent by six. Edelmann and Martha Carrol ('02) combined to defend only three Clarke shots at the goal.
The Luther men also experienced a high-scoring game on Saturday, Sept. 16 against William Penn, mirroring the women's Clarke score 7-1. The win also proved to be a team effort with six men contributing to the score. Matt Landers ('02) scored two goals. Other goal winners included: Wade Murray ('02), Josh Korth ('01), David Pendergast ('02), Zach Smith ('01) and Frode Oen ('02). William Penn only attempted three shots at the goal, winning only one.
Both teams face rival Wartburg at home on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 5 and 7 p.m. under the lights.
