Norse football reaches the .500 mark
Date 11/2/2000 12:00 AM | Topic: SportsLuther football crushed William Penn on Saturday, Oct. 28, 42-7, to boost its record to 4-4. The Norse remain in the middle of the IIAC conference standings and face Loras this Saturday in Dubuque.
The Norse began the game against William Penn outscoring them by 7 (14-7) in the first period and held them for the remaining periods, scoring 7 in the second, 14 in the third, and 7 in the fourth. In first period play, the game appeared close, and William Penn possessed the ball for 7:37. Luther owned the ball for the remaining 7:23.
Offensively, the Norse totalled 511 yards and only allowed the opponent 192. Quarterback Jake Nimrod ('01) ran for 232 yards and passed for 238, and Mike Jefferson ('04) rushed for 157 yards. In addition, Chris Wenthold ('02) added 109 yards in receiving to contribute to Luther's dominance over William Penn.
The Norse were on fire scoring-wise, and Thane Holland ('01) scored three of the Norse's six touchdowns. Also contributing to scoring were Wenthold with two touchdowns and Jefferson with one. Ben Ready ('01) and Josh Cinnamo ('03) added the other six points in passing and kicking.
Defensively, James Russell ('02), Geoff Smith ('01), and Greg Block ('02) lead the Norse in tackles, and Chris VanGerpen ('02) had an interception.
When asked about the victory, Nimrod stated, "I'm glad that (Coach) Paul Solberg got a win for his last football game at Carlson Stadium."
Solberg is retiring after this season, and the Norse play their last two games away. They take on Loras on Saturday, Nov. 4 for their next conference competition.
